![]() ![]() When the male love interest’s mother, a trans woman, dies, it’s supposed to be a very tragic and significant moment, but her character wasn’t developed enough for it to have much emotional impact. Neither of the narratives are particularly plot-driven, which is usually fine with me, but I also didn’t really care about any of the characters and I found the writing to be somewhat stilted and melodramatic (I think some of the awkwardness of the writing might have been the fault of the translation, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was downright distracting at times.) In Kitchen, the protagonist is supposed to be falling in love with the man she lives with, but there didn’t seem to be anything particularly special about their relationship. The novella follows a young woman who moves in with a man and his transgendered mother after her beloved grandmother dies, and the short story focuses on a woman trying to move past her grief when her boyfriend dies in a car accident. This book consists of a novella, Kitchen, and a short story, Moonlight Shadow. ![]() I had a feeling early on that this book wasn’t going to be for me, but I decided to stick with it and read to the end because it was so short. ![]()
